Who knew that concrete could have such a warm and welcoming feeling?

You might not expect such a hard, bleak material to have a prominent role in a residential building, other than perhaps on the outside, let alone be the eye-catching feature. Aboday Architects go even further, by creating a concrete slide as the icon of the building, highly visible from the street. There are practical issues to concrete of course, one being its large thermal mass. A problem the architects resolved with natural ventilation and shading, heat-resistant finishes, and a 40mm wall cavity to prevent overheating during the summer.

The lesson here is: if you can’t beat them, join them, or perhaps better, if for whatever reason you have an element of your home you’re unsure of, make it into a feature.
